GALLERY HAYASHI + ART BRIDGE is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Tokyo of new work by Mutiara Riswari entitled Seeing is Believing. The show will be on view from 1st March and run through 16 March 2024, marking the artists’ first solo exhibition in Japan and the third shows with the gallery.

Born in Semarang, and live and work in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Mutiara reflects on a moving and profound experience for her, seeing the essence of her own existence from childhood to the present day. Looking into her work, the abstract patterns of repetitive strokes demonstrate therapeutic value in the creation process. The context of her current existence is strongly connected to acrylic and pastel which reminding her of her childhood.

Her work evokes a sense of Indonesian spirituality and cultural background, while at the same time being strongly influenced by oriental plastic traditions such as calligraphy and ink painting. This is due to the fact that she was brought up by a Catholic, Chinese father and a Muslim, Indonesian mother, and her very nature and harmony with herself is expressed on the canvas.

Following on from the group exhibition (In Different Ways) and art fair (ART FAIR ASIA FUKUOKA), this solo exhibition, Seeing is Believing takes the audiences on an introspective journey, providing space for a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
