Artist
In a closed “Moment”, 2023
Shugo Kashiwagi (b. 1996, Tokyo, Japan) creates sculptural works using natural clay dug from the ground and mixed with collected grasses, plants, and seeds. Themes such as life and death, moment and eternity, body and environment, and nature and artificial objects intersect in his work. By allowing different temporalities and states to cross, Kashiwagi attempts to rearrange these elements into new landscapes.
Kashiwagi received a BFA in Intermedia Art from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022 and an MFA in Intermedia Art from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2024. He was awarded the Salon de Printemps Award. Residencies include the Unno-daira Mountain Hut Artist-in-Residence in Toyama and the Kurishima Artist-in-Residence in Kagawa.
His work has been exhibited at the Setouchi Triennale, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale (Niigata), Curation Fair (Tokyo), GALLERY HAYASHI + ART BRIDGE (Tokyo), and GASBON METABOLISM (Yamanashi), among others. Kashiwagi lives and works in Tokyo.
