GALLERY HAYASHI + ART BRIDGE is pleased to present “THREAD POETICS” solo exhibition by Moemi Takano. This exhibition will be the first solo exhibition at GALLERY HAYASHI + ART BRIDGE and bring into focus the thread at the heart of Takano’s multifarious pursuits.
Moemi Takano describes her work as a crossing point between art history and the social and cultural background of textiles. Through staying in various countries and learning the traditional dyeing and weaving techniques of each region, her works explore those techniques with awareness of her daily life.
After graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University of London, UK, she visited Peru, India and Mexico and experienced traditional local natural dyeing. She had taught the process of making bright colours using plants and insects and the primitive skills of weaving intricately patterned cloth with wooden sticks and ropes. From these experiences, she has realised that the repetition of manual work eventually becomes culture and has dedicated her works to expressing the interests that arise from daily life.
Moemi Takano repeatedly combines and divides threads to create her works. These attempts are like those of a poet who deconstructs the meaning of words and gives them meaning again.
